The Starlink Train: What It Is and How to Catch One

Every few days, somewhere in the world, people look up and see something genuinely strange: a perfectly straight line of bright dots gliding silently across the night sky, evenly spaced, like a string of pearls being pulled between the stars. Social media fills with UFO reports. The explanation is more mundane but arguably more impressive — it's a batch of brand-new Starlink satellites, launched hours or days earlier, still flying in the tight formation they were released in.

Why the train forms

A Falcon 9 rocket releases its entire Starlink batch — typically 20 to 60 satellites depending on the version — in a single moment, about fifteen minutes after liftoff. The satellites ride to orbit stacked flat on top of each other, and when the stack is released they drift apart very slowly. From the ground, dozens of satellites occupying almost the same orbit look like a single luminous line.

The train is also unusually bright at this stage. The satellites are still at low altitude (around 280–350 km, versus 550 km when operational), which makes them appear larger and brighter, and they haven't yet oriented themselves into the low-reflectivity attitude they use for normal service. The combination — low, bright, and bunched — is what makes a fresh train so conspicuous.

Why it disappears within weeks

Each satellite raises its own orbit using a small ion thruster, and they don't all climb at once. Some head straight for the operational shell, others wait in a parking orbit for their assigned slot to precess into position. As they climb and spread along the orbital plane, the spacing between them grows from kilometres to hundreds of kilometres. Within one to three weeks the train has stretched beyond recognition, and after a month the satellites are just individual moving dots — still trackable, but no longer a spectacle.

This is why 'catch it while you can' genuinely applies. A train is best in its first week, good in its second, and mostly gone by its third.

How to see one

Three things need to line up: a recent launch, a pass over your location, and twilight timing. The satellites are only visible when they're sunlit while your sky is dark, which confines sightings to roughly one to two hours after sunset or before sunrise.

The practical recipe: check the Launches page for missions flown in the last two weeks, then open the Starlink passes page for your city, which lists tonight's visible passes computed from live orbital data — when to look, which compass direction, and how high the pass climbs. A pass that peaks above 40° elevation is the one worth setting an alarm for. Find a spot away from streetlights, let your eyes adapt for ten minutes, and look toward the rise direction a minute early; the train appears suddenly and crosses the sky in about five minutes.

Is it getting rarer?

In one sense trains are more common than ever — SpaceX launches Starlink batches multiple times per week. But each individual train is dimmer than in the early years: newer satellites carry dielectric mirror film and dark paint specifically to reduce their brightness, part of SpaceX's agreement with astronomers. The result is that a 2026-era train is a subtle, elegant sight rather than the blazing chains of 2019 that triggered worldwide UFO reports. It's still absolutely worth seeing.
